About

Literature Works is a registered charity, Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation and Company limited by guarantee, set up to enable and nurture literature development in South West England.

Our mission is to support, understand and advocate for our regional literature sector in all its contexts, for everyone, for all ages, and that sector’s place, growth, relevance and value in a national and international literature development future.

International Priorities

One Giant Read, a digital project to encourage interest in exploring science, technology and medicine (STM) subjects through the medium of science fiction. Funded by the UK Space Agency, the European Space Agency.

Key Strengths

  • Access to a directory of creative writers based in the South West of England
  • Strong existing partnership with Plymouth University
  • Extensive experience of managing writers-in-residence programmes
  • Creative thinking

Seeking Partnerships With

Where funding is available:

  • National or specialist libraries across the world
  • Galleries and museums with an interest in literary heritage
  • Literature development agencies or ‘Houses’ across the world

Purpose of Partnerships

Writer exchanges or residencies– for example:

In 2020 the city of Plymouth (where we are based) will commemorate 400 years since the Mayflower sailed to America; a large cultural programme is planned to celebrate this.  We for our part should like to partner with a US-based organisation to achieve a productive anglo-american literary exchange, funding permitting.
