About
Derron Sandy is a 29-year-old Trinidadian spoken word poet and the artistic director of the leading Spoken Word Poetry Organisation in the Caribbean, The 2 Cents Movement. He has been a performer for over eight years at the highest National Level and has performed around the Caribbean. The 2 Cents Movement is in the process of developing Spoken Word Poetry as a critical part of the Education system in Trinidad and Tobago and Sandy is at the core of this ground-breaking development. He is also working on his first collection of poetry and short stories.
Summary of work
The 2 Cents Movement has become a staple in many schools who anticipate our performances and workshops. We have been the first organisation to take poetry extensively to Primary level Schools. We have visited and performed in over 100 Secondary Schools and over 50 Primary Schools in Trinidad and Tobago. We have also developed the National Secondary School Poetry Competition and the National Slam for adults.
Summary of work to develop
The 2 Cents Movement is in the process of developing a sustainable curriculum using Spoken Word Poetry. The major objectives of this are to diversify the approaches to education in Trinidad and Tobago and expand the literary propensity of students to create their own work and implement it as a learning tool.
