Over the last 15 years I have worked in a variety of bookish environments. An entry level job at the writers’ association English PEN led to stints at London cultural powerhouse the South Bank Centre, radical indie The New Press and august publisher Faber & Faber. My last ‘day’ job before going freelance was four brilliant years as deputy head of British Council Literature, which latterly included project managing the multi-stranded, multi-national Edinburgh World Writers Conference. I am absolutely passionate about getting game-changing writing into the hands and heads of as many people as possible.
Summary of work
I am Programme Director of the UK’s foremost short story festival, Small Wonder. This five day festival takes place every September at Charleston, the Sussex retreat of the Bloomsbury Group. We present a mix of innovative, celebrated and new writers with an strong focus on excellence in short form.
Work to develop
I am really interested in looking at new ways of presenting literature on the public stage. I love events which mix music, art and other media with literature. As a committed armchair and literal traveller, I am always on the lookout for ways of developing UK audiences for fabulous writing from other countries. I am currently the lucky recipient of an AIDF award which allows me to develop links between Small Wonder and Caribbean writing.
