About

Writing West Midlands is the literature development agency for the West Midlands region of the UK.

We work with emerging and established creative writers.

We run the Birmingham Literature Festival and run events around the year, including promoting writers from outside the UK. Our writer development work includes our Room 204 writer development scheme and the annual National Writers Conference.

We work with children and young people through our Spark Young Writers programme, which runs over 200 workshops a year and runs an annual Young Writers Summer School.

We have manage networks of regional publishers, universities and literature festivals.

International Priorities

During 2016/17 we are working with the British Council in Ukraine on a UK/Ukraine Writer Exchange programme. We are working with the Goethe-Institut and the LiteraTurm Festival in Frankfurt am Main on events. We have a European writer strand in the Birmingham Literature Festival, featuring writers from various countries. We are working with the Freeword Centre on their Translator in Residence project.

Key Strengths

We are based in a very diverse part of the UK, a combination of rural and urban with many towns and cities, good international transport links and a total of ten universities and many established writers. As an organisation, we are small in scale and easy to work with, with a real interest in collaboration beyond the UK.

Our contacts with writers, young writers, universities, local authorities, festivals and independent publishers are excellent. We are beginning to build a network of literary translators in our region, We like to share our enthusiasm and resources and we like to start projects that can be sustained.

Seeking Partnerships With

We are interested in partnerships with literature festivals and with organisations that have an interest in development opportunities for writers. We are keen to welcome writers from beyond the UK to our festival and to encourage writers we work with to make international visits.

Purpose of Partnerships

We would like more events at our Festival with writers from outside the UK.

We would like more writer exchanges.

We would like to introduce our readers/audiences and the writers we work with to become more aware of writing beyond the UK.
